The Pre-K class' theme for this month is "Mini Beasts in the Garden" - learning about all types of insects. Today for sensory play, their mission was to help free the trapped mini beasts.
The teachers had many of their mini beast toys frozen in blocks of ice and asked the students to help free them. Students enthusiastically set forth in problem solving as a group and as individuals.
How to free the insects from the various sized blocks of ice?
Not only did they work on skills like teamwork and problem solving. But they added to their library of sensory play experiences. Touching and handling the cold and slippery ice, as it gradually melted. Stimulating all the tactile senses as well. A bit of messy fun and in the end, a happy ending: all min beasts were freed and safely returned to their classroom!
